Allowing a family member or friend to become an authorized user of your credit card is a common way to help him or her establish credit. Granting access is easy, but authorized users should be aware that they won’t be able to make changes to the card’s limit or other terms. Cardholders should be aware that authorized users are not legally liable for debts they incur on the card.

  • Credit card account number
  • Authorized user social security number
  • Authorized user contact information

  1. Establishing an Authorized User

    • 1Contact your credit card company using the telephone number on the back of the card. You may also use the telephone number located on your monthly credit card statement.
    • 2Ask customer service for permission to add an authorized user.
    • 3Provide the representative with the authorized user’s name, social security number, and contact information.
    • 4Request that the card be sent to the billing address. It can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to receive the card in the mail.
    • 5Review the cardholder terms with the authorized user, noting the payment due date, late fees and interest rates.
