The biggest story of last year is no surprise: the ongoing battle over federal health reform, according to the latest IFAwebnews.com poll.

Exactly 73% of participants in the poll said the controversy surrounding the federal health reform law was the biggest insurance story in 20111.

During the year, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to rule on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the landmark federal health reform law passed in March 2010, and states continuing to both battle in court and prepare for implementation.

Rangers FC owner to sue BBC for defamation

The owner of Rangers Football Club, Craig Whyte, is reportedly seeking legal advice in preparation to launch a lawsuit against BBC Scotland for defamation over a documentary it aired about him in October.

Mr Whyte is understood to have consulted Glasgow law firm Bannatyne Kirkwood France (BKF) and Co. to start legal proceedings against BBC Scotland.

Moodys affirms Girbraltar Life’s IFS after merger

Moodys has affirmed the A2 insurance financial strength (IFS) rating of Gibraltar Life Insurance following its merger with AIG Edison and AIG Star Life. The rating outlook of Gibraltar Life remains positive.

At the same time, Moodys affirmed and withdrew the IFS rating of AIG Edison because of a reorganisation of the company and its merger into Gibraltar Life.

HHS: 12% small biz health insurance rate hike in Pa. ‘excessive’

An Indiana-based insurance company approved to sell health insurance products in Pennsylvania has been charged with small businesses “unreasonably high premium increases” after increasing rates 12%, according to federal officials.

Everence Insurance faces the charge after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted its first federal rate review, required under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, HHS officials said.
